The Lactation Consultant will provide skilled lactation care and instruction to breastfeeding mothers and infants throughout the healthcare facility, including inpatient and outpatient settings. Promotes breastfeeding and assists with facilitating change within the clinical settings using evidence-based care management. Contacts physician offices, patients and other departments as needed to facilitate patient care in the department. Orders breastfeeding/pump supplies for the unit and restocks supplies as needed. Accurately enters information and consults into the hospital Electronic Medical Record system. Able to assist nursing staff with duties involving indirect patient care


Uses two patient identifiers when assisting with breastfeeding. Demonstrates awareness of importance of accurate patient identification at all times.

Does not use unacceptable abbreviations.

Notifies the Bio-Med department for nonfunctioning equipment in a timely manner.

Orders supplies in cost effective manner as needed and assists with restocking. Keeps accurate inventory of unit supplies.

Practices telephone etiquette when placing and answering calls for physicians, patient/families and other departments and communicates messages timely to the appropriate person/department.

Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principle of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit facility.

Responds appropriately to all Code Pink alarms.

Assists in notifying nursing personnel in a timely manner for call lights, clinical alarms, telephone calls, or as needed.

Utilizes the National Patient Safety Goals in the work place as related to job performance. Demonstrates awareness of a safe environment for staff, patients, visitors, or any other persons on the unit.

Participates in data collection for PI specific to the unit.

Assists discharge planner with faxing and acquiring authorization for release of information as needed.

Completes additional non clinical duties as assigned by the staff; seeks clarification from Charge Nurse when necessary.

Performs other essential duties as assigned or required.





  1. IBCLC required
  2. College degree preferred.
  3. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  4. NRP (AAP) within 30 days upon hire and maintain current
  5. One to two years previous experience
  6. Experience using computers for consultation documentation.
